Interspecific differences in snail susceptibility to crab predation at Jakobsen’s Beach, Lake Tanganyika

ثبت نشده
چکیده

The robust crushing chelae of durophagous crabs in Lake Tanganyika and the heavily calcified and ornate shells of endemic thiarid gastropods have been identified as highly derived coevolutionary adaptations to predator-prey interactions between the two taxa (West and Cohen 1994, West et al. 1991). There is a striking diversity of adaptations among gastropods in the lake that signal the evolution of unique intraand inter-generic morphologies and behaviors as strategies for predator defense (West and Cohen, 1996).

Snail susceptibility to crab predation: A case study of co-evolution from Lake Tanganyika, East Africa

Co-evolution has been invoked as an explanation for Lake Tanganyika’s unusual endemic fauna. The crabs Platytelphusa armata and Potamonautes platynotus are molluscivores, found in the same habitats as the gastropods Lavigeria coronata, L. grandis, and L. nassa (West & Cohen 1994). As these are the largest gastropods in the Lavigeria species flock, and often the most exposed, we are determining ...

Sediment microbiomes associated with critical habitat of the Juvenile American Horseshoe Crab; Limulus polyphemus

Plumb Beach, Brooklyn, New York in USA is an important horseshoe crab breeding and nursery ground that has experienced substantial anthropogenic influence, including pollution, erosion and subsequent restoration. Since little is known about the relationship between sediment microbial communities and juvenile horseshoe crab survival, next generation sequencing was used to characterize and compar...

Susceptibility to Predation Affects Trait-Mediated Indirect Interactions by Reversing Interspecific Competition

Numerous studies indicate that the behavioral responses of prey to the presence of predators can have an important role in structuring assemblages through trait-mediated indirect interactions. Few studies, however, have addressed how relative susceptibility to predation influences such interactions. Here we examine the effect of chemical cues from the common shore crab Carcinus maenas on the fo...

Intraguild predation by shore crabs affects mortality, behavior, growth, and densities of California horn snails

The California horn snail, Cerithideopsis californica, and the shore crabs, Pachygrapsus crassipes and Hemigrapsus oregonensis, compete for epibenthic microalgae, but the crabs also eat snails. Such intraguild predation is common in nature, despite models predicting instability. Using a series of manipulations and field surveys, we examined intraguild predation from several angles, including th...

Predation in two species of leech under laboratory conditions

Two 60 day experiments on predation behavior of leeches were conducted concurrently. In the first, medicinal leeches, Hirudo orientalis (Utevsky and Trontelj, 2005) were fed to satiation on bovine blood and subsequently transferred into two large opaque plastic containers of equal size but with differing temperatures, 6-7?C and 23-24?C, containing starved Erpobdella octoculata (L.). At the high...
